Day 47 – a breath away from Idaho.
Well, the rest helped tremendously. While the pain is still present, my muscles are strong and powerful again and today’s ride was wonderful. The scenery is spectacular here and the views continually changing. The depressing recovery of the past 36 hours quickly vanished with some light climbs into the Kootenai River Country and the marvelous weather ringing in the weekend.
The ride was relatively uneventful until the last 10 miles into the town of Troy when I took a flat. This was karma for only a few miles earlier I had met a rider at a stop who had just suffered several and I made a bad joke. The humor gods had the last laugh.
Although I had hoped to make it into Idaho today, I played it safe when I got to the last town, Troy. After stopping for some groceries I decided the motel I saw on the way into town looked promising and I should put my leg up with ice again instead of camping. I pulled into the Ranch Motel, had a long laugh filled conversation with the family who owned the place (they invited me to share their vegetarian dinner even) then took a long shower and sat to a huge meal. It’s amazing what a nice ride, a big meal and smiling people can do for the spirit and the body.
The healing process is analogous to the lessons learned from the journey of the road; some things take time, so sit back and relax. Well… at least for the night.
Tomorrow… I’ll be in Idaho!
